The UK Foreign Office has placed eleven more countries to its public warning register about the threats of toxic alcohol contamination from adulterated beverages.

The revised advisory now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following evidence showing "a global increase in the number of documented incidents" of methanol poisoning.

Just last month, the government had previously included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current register, in response to several high-profile incidents such as the deadly loss of 6 travelers in Laos in 2024.

Tourists are being warned that even small amounts of methanol can result in blindness or death within 12 to 48 hrs.

Exactly what is Industrial Alcohol and In what way is it Used?

Methanol is a harmful substance often utilized in antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, and paint thinner. This substance is not designed for drinking.

Although it is generated during the production of spirits, reputable manufacturers reduce it to low, safe levels for human consumption through the distillation process.

Yet in some countries, it is clandestinely blended into spirits to cut costs, and because it is flavorless and smell-free, it is very difficult to detect.

Government Advice for Travellers

Government official a senior official stated that all travellers should know the symptoms of industrial alcohol toxicity.

"While drinking spirits in foreign countries, stick to trusted places and refrain from local brews or unspecified beverages," the minister advised.

"In case something seems unusual, like a headache that's much more severe than typical or vision problems – contact a doctor fast."

The complete roster of destinations noted as presenting a danger of industrial alcohol contamination now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
