Typhoon Matmo Slammed Southern China Bringing Widespread Relocations

Typhoon Matmo made landfall on the coastal regions of China on Sunday afternoon, following its sweeping across the provincial island of Hainan. The intense weather led to the relocation of around 350,000 people, bringing torrential rain and damaging winds, especially between Wuchuan in Guangdong and Hainan's Wenchang. Ferry services were suspended and air travel disrupted at Haikou Meilan airport.

Typhoon Statistics

The typhoon, the 21st cyclone of 2025, recorded wind speeds of 94mph and dumped over 50mm of precipitation in a short period in Chongzou and Qinzhou. Urban areas of the region also experienced high rainfall totals.

The storm prompted China's top-tier emergency warning, with disruptions in the city, where commercial activities, transport links and roads were shut. In Hong Kong, 100 flights were impacted and dozens called off.

Future Projections

As Matmo moves inland towards Cao Bang province in Vietnam, it is projected to weaken into a less intense system with 55mph winds but will continue to bring heavy rainfall. Vietnam's northern regions could experience 130-150mm on the following day, increasing the risk of inundation and mudslides. The system is anticipated to move towards Yunnan region in China, where additional heavy rainfall is probable.

Other Storm Systems

Meanwhile, a hurricane named Priscilla developed off the Pacific shoreline of Mexico on Saturday night, first as a storm system. It prompted a storm watch for south-western regions from a coastal point to Punta Mita on the start of the week.

In the morning of Sunday, the hurricane was about 491 kilometers from Cabo Corrientes with sustained winds of 65mph. It intensified into a severe cyclone in the night, when wind speeds peaked at 75mph.

Though not expected to make landfall, Priscilla is likely to produce dangerous waves and rip currents as it moves north-west along the coast towards Baja California Sur. Substantial rain is predicted on the coming day, amounting to 100-150mm in specific Mexican states, with local totals at about 20 centimeters. Colima and western Jalisco could face 50-100mm.

On Sunday, the cyclone was 130 miles south-east of a location in Oman with maximum sustained winds of 64mph.

The storm, which has moved in a southwestern direction and weakened, is predicted to turn towards the east into the Arabian Sea. Turbulent waters are expected to continue along the coastal stretch and heavy rainfall is anticipated in coastal districts including specific Indian cities.
