In the course of a recent visit to Tokyo, former US President Trump together with Japan's new Premier Takaichi shared warm compliments and vowed to strengthen the already robust bilateral ties.
Donald Trump commended Prime Minister Takaichi as a ‘great’ figure and applauded her on becoming the nation's inaugural female prime minister. During their discussions at Tokyo's official venue, Trump expressed confidence that she would prove to be one of the ‘outstanding leaders’ of the country.
Takaichi, identified as a close associate of late Prime Minister Abe, praised his efforts to resolve international disputes and according to sources pledged to put forward Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Both governments revealed a series of collaborative projects in areas such as power, AI, and rare earths. Japan-based firms are exploring funding of up to $400bn in the US.
Additionally, Japan had earlier pledged $550 billion in long-term US investments, financing, and assurances as part of an arrangement to secure exemption from Trump's tariffs.
These moves are seen as potentially easing any future demands from the US side for Tokyo to boost its defense expenditure. Takaichi responded to this by promising to accelerate proposals to raise military budget to two percent of GDP.
“Everything I know from Shinzo and others, you will be one of the great prime ministers,” Donald Trump told Takaichi. “I’d also like to congratulate you on being the first woman prime minister. It’s a big deal,” he continued.
The encounter underscores the ongoing significance of the US-Japan alliance and sets the stage for further cooperation on economic, security, and foreign policy areas.
