The president-elect of the prestigious debating society has been removed from his position after losing a no-confidence vote that followed his disputed online comments about the conservative activist.

The motion against the student leader achieved the required super-majority to oust him from his position, according to an announcement from the organization.

Contentious Posts

The controversy began after Mr Abaraonye reportedly shared messages on online platforms that seemed to welcome the death of the American conservative figure, who was fatally shot while speaking at a university in Utah.

According to reports, one social media message reportedly stated "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an extended form of the acronym for 'laughing out loud'.

The student leader is also reported to have written in a WhatsApp chat with other members appearing to welcome the incident.

Election Results

The no-confidence motion took place over the weekend, with results revealed on Tuesday.

Official notices indicated that over twelve hundred votes were cast supporting removal, while just over five hundred were against the motion.

The notice stated that the president-elect was deemed to have resigned in following the society's regulations.

Election Controversies

Proceedings were temporarily halted early on the previous day after the election official was reportedly subjected to "interference, threats, and inappropriate behavior" from several representatives.

In a response, Mr Abaraonye claimed that the count had been halted because electoral officials believed "no legitimate and true result could be reached as a result of procedural failures".

His statement unequivocally denied that any person appointed by George had participated in threatening or obstructive conduct.

Continuing Controversy

The president-elect maintained that significant concerns had been submitted to the disciplinary committee and that he continued as president-elect.

His statement added that he was "proud and thankful to have the backing of significantly more than half of university members" who voted to have a "safe election and oppose efforts to undermine the electoral process".

Opponents have said that any failure to remove him would "signal to the world that the Oxford Union has prioritized politics over principles".

External Reactions

On recently, Mikey McCoy presented an open letter to the society on a related program podcast.

The message criticized the union of becoming a place where "presidents of the union publicly celebrate the assassination of a ideological rival".

The statement indicated that if Mr Abaraonye were to keep his position, Kirk's allies would "personally contact every U.S. political figure who has ever graced the union's chamber and advise them against future participation".

The Oxford Union had earlier criticized the student's comments after the activist's killing and confirmed that concerns filed against him had been referred for official review.

The president-elect had been one of multiple members to debate with Kirk at the union in spring.
