Authorities have decided to eliminate aerial devices transporting contraband tobacco across the border, its prime minister has warned.
This action responds after unauthorized aerial incursions necessitated airport closures on several occasions recently, including at the weekend, accompanied by temporary closures of cross-border movement during each incident.
Border checkpoints will now be closed indefinitely following repeated balloon incursions.
Prime Minister Inga Ruginiene said, "authorities will not hesitate to employ even the most severe actions when our airspace is violated."
Detailing the measures during a briefing, the Prime Minister confirmed military forces were implementing "all necessary measures" to eliminate aerial threats.
Regarding frontier restrictions, Ruginiene said diplomats will still be able to travel between the two countries, and EU citizens and Lithuanians can enter from Belarus, but no other movement will be allowed.
"In this way, we are sending a signal to foreign authorities and saying that no hybrid attack will be tolerated within our territory, and we'll implement maximum countermeasures to stop such attacks," government officials declared.
Official communications saw no quick answer from Minsk officials.
The Baltic nation intends to coordinate with partners about the security challenges presented while potentially considering invocation of Nato's Article 4 - a protocol allowing member state consultation on any issue of concern, specifically concerning defense matters - she added.
Aviation hubs faced multiple shutdowns during holiday periods from balloon incidents from Belarus, disrupting air transport and passenger movement, according to Baltic News Service.
Earlier this month, several unauthorized objects traversed the border, leading to 30 flight cancellations affecting 6,000 passengers, according to emergency management officials.
This situation represents ongoing challenges: through early October, 544 balloons were recorded entering Lithuania across the frontier in recent months, according to official statements, compared to higher numbers in prior period.
Other European airports - covering northern and central European sites - experienced similar aerial disruptions, with unauthorized drone observations, over past months.
